Red Sea & Middle East
Oman

Oman splits into two worlds: the fjords of Musandam (crewed trips out of Khasab) and the Daymaniyat coast near Muscat. October-April is the comfortable season with clear skies and settled winds; the summer monsoon ('khareef') affects Salalah in the south rather than the northern charter bases.

Mediterranean
Turkey

Meltemi-style winds in July-August in Aegean. Turquoise Coast (Gocek-Fethiye-Kekova) is protected; very popular with British/American sailors. Often best value in Mediterranean.

Sailing Conditions

Oman averages 11 knots in winter and 14 knots in summer. There's no hurricane season, which makes year-round planning easier.

Turkey averages 11 knots in winter and 13 knots in summer. No hurricane season.

In terms of sailing difficulty, Oman is generally rated moderate and Turkey is easy to moderate. The difference matters: Oman asks more of the skipper — confidence at the helm and some experience with coastal navigation helps.

  • Sur & Ras al Jinz — Eastern point where green turtles nest - visit after a dawn sail
Turkey
  • Blue Lagoon, Ölüdeniz — Turquoise water; paragliding
  • Butterfly Valley — Dramatic canyon; waterfalls
  • Cleopatra's Island (Sedir) — Ancient city; unique sand
  • Gemiler Island — Byzantine ruins; sunset views

Which Should You Choose?

If you've never chartered before

Choose Turkey. Charter fleets are abundant, marina staff speak English, checkout sails are standard.

If you want warmer / tropical water

Choose Oman. Warmer water year-round (often 75–85°F), palm-fringed anchorages.

If you want history / culture / food

Choose Turkey. Mediterranean culture, history, cuisine, wines.

Captain's Take

"Musandam is the sleeper hit of the Gulf - sheer khors that look like Norway crossed with the desert. Sail out of Khasab at first light when the water is glass and the dolphins come to the bow. The Daymaniyat Islands off Muscat are the opposite: easy weekend sailing with the best snorkelling in Oman. Pair both if you have 10+ days; most charters fly into Muscat and reposition."

"Gocek is the Turkish sailing capital most non-Turkish sailors have never heard of. Twelve islands in the bay, most with quiet bays and protected anchorages. Bedri Rahmi Bay (named after the Turkish artist who painted a rock here in 1974) is iconic. Gocek town has multiple well-stocked supermarkets (Migros, BIM) and excellent restaurants (Kebabçi Halil, Bager). The Turquoise Coast from Gocek to Kekova is the most protected sailing waters in the Mediterranean — sheltered from Meltemi by the Taurus mountains. Provisioning is cheaper than Croatia, and the experience is more authentic."
