Red Sea & Middle East
Oman

Oman splits into two worlds: the fjords of Musandam (crewed trips out of Khasab) and the Daymaniyat coast near Muscat. October-April is the comfortable season with clear skies and settled winds; the summer monsoon ('khareef') affects Salalah in the south rather than the northern charter bases.

Sailing Conditions

Italy averages 12 knots in winter and 9 knots in summer. There's no hurricane season, which makes year-round planning easier.

Oman averages 11 knots in winter and 14 knots in summer. No hurricane season.

In terms of sailing difficulty, Italy is generally rated moderate to difficult and Oman is moderate. The difference matters: Italy asks more of the skipper — confidence at the helm and some experience with coastal navigation helps.

Which Should You Choose?

If you've never chartered before

Both work for first-timers. The default choice for the industry is BVI; choose that unless you have specific reasons to prefer Italy or Oman.

If you want warmer / tropical water

Choose Oman. Warmer water year-round (often 75–85°F), palm-fringed anchorages.

If you want history / culture / food

Choose Italy. Mediterranean culture, history, cuisine, wines.

Captain's Take

"Amalfi Coast in summer is stunning but challenging. Berthing fees run €150-300/night even for 50ft catamarans. The recommended strategy: anchor out in quiet bays (Cala di Ieranto, Marina del Cantone) and dinghy in. Capri's Marina Grande charges premium prices; the alternative is anchoring at Cala del Rio on the south side of the island — beautiful and free. Beware the strong Mistral-like NW Libeccio that can pipe up suddenly in late afternoon. Aeolian Islands (Stromboli) are far less crowded and a stunning sail south."

"Musandam is the sleeper hit of the Gulf - sheer khors that look like Norway crossed with the desert. Sail out of Khasab at first light when the water is glass and the dolphins come to the bow. The Daymaniyat Islands off Muscat are the opposite: easy weekend sailing with the best snorkelling in Oman. Pair both if you have 10+ days; most charters fly into Muscat and reposition."
