- Everglades (Flamingo) — Mangrove wilderness and a real offshore feel just an hour from Miami
- Komodo National Park — Dragons, manta rays, Pink Beach — bucket-list dive area
- Raja Ampat — 75% of all marine species; liveaboard-only diving
- Gili Islands (NW Lombok) — Calm water, snorkelling, no cars
- Flores (Maumere / Labuan Bajo) — Gateway to Komodo; volcano hikes
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Florida. It's the more forgiving first-charter ground — charter fleets are abundant, marina staff speak English, checkout sails are standard.
Choose Indonesia. Warmer water year-round (often 75–85°F), palm-fringed anchorages.
Florida has 0 cultural anchorages vs Indonesia's 1. Pick by what kind of stop you want between swims.
Captain's Take
"Fort Lauderdale is the least intimidating place in the world to start a catamaran charter - the Intracoastal gives you a protected shakedown and the Keys give you your first ocean miles in tiny steps. The classic week is down the Keys with an overnight in Key West. Keep an eye on the Gulf Stream: it runs north at 2-4kt and decides every passage you make. Summer afternoons bring building storms; plan to be anchored by 15:00."
"Raja Ampat is worth every mile of repositioning, but do not make it your whole trip. The classic Komodo route out of Labuan Bajo - Pink Beach, Padar, the dragons - is the more achievable week for most groups, and the sailing between islands is superb in the June-September SE trades. If you have 10+ days, add a Flores volcano day. Indonesia rewards slow: the anchorages are the destination."
