Which Should You Choose?

If you've never chartered before

Choose Florida. It's the more forgiving first-charter ground — charter fleets are abundant, marina staff speak English, checkout sails are standard.

If you want warmer / tropical water

Neither is tropical — these are temperate or seasonal grounds (peak water typically 65–75°F). If warm water is the priority, consider a Caribbean or Red Sea charter instead.

If you want history / culture / food

Choose Greece. Mediterranean culture, history, cuisine, wines.

Captain's Take

"Fort Lauderdale is the least intimidating place in the world to start a catamaran charter - the Intracoastal gives you a protected shakedown and the Keys give you your first ocean miles in tiny steps. The classic week is down the Keys with an overnight in Key West. Keep an eye on the Gulf Stream: it runs north at 2-4kt and decides every passage you make. Summer afternoons bring building storms; plan to be anchored by 15:00."

"The Meltemi wind peaks in July-August with gusts of 30-40 knots, mostly in the central Cyclades (Mykonos-Paros-Naxos corridor). If you're a less experienced crew, base yourself in the Saronic Gulf (Aegina, Hydra, Spetses) or the Ionian (Corfu, Lefkada) — far calmer. For adventurous crews, the Meltemi gives excellent downwind runs from Mykonos to Santorini in just one day. Always have a Plan B harbor within 10nm — Koufonisia and Donoussa are great Meltemi shelters."
