Which Should You Choose?

If you've never chartered before

Choose Belize. It's the more forgiving first-charter ground — charter fleets are abundant, marina staff speak English, checkout sails are standard.

If you want warmer / tropical water

Choose Belize. Warmer water year-round (often 75–85°F), palm-fringed anchorages.

If you want history / culture / food

Choose France. Mediterranean culture, history, cuisine, wines.

Captain's Take

"Belize is the reef that made the Caribbean famous, without the crowds. The barrier reef runs the whole coast and the atolls - Turneffe, Lighthouse, Glover's - are a real offshore feel in a small country. The sailing is easy but the passes are serious: read the tide tables and take the guides' advice on cuts. Belize City is the usual base, but skip it for the cayes if you can fly into San Pedro."

"The Mistral is no joke — gusts of 40-50 knots that can last 2-5 days. Check the forecast before heading west of Cap d'Antibes. If a Mistral is coming, plan a sheltered plan: Port-Cros (Hyères Islands), the Bay of La Ciotat, or even Monaco (well protected). On Mistral days, the coast can be unberthable but the islands are calm. For new crews, the Iles de Lérins just off Cannes are an excellent training ground with all the services you need. Berths on the Riviera are expensive — budget €100-300/night depending on boat size."
