Which Should You Choose?

If you've never chartered before

Both work for first-timers. The default choice for the industry is BVI; choose that unless you have specific reasons to prefer Bahamas or Italy.

If you want warmer / tropical water

Choose Bahamas. Warmer water year-round (often 75–85°F), palm-fringed anchorages.

If you want history / culture / food

Choose Italy. Mediterranean culture, history, cuisine, wines.

Captain's Take

"The pigs of Big Major Cay have become a global phenomenon — and crowds have grown accordingly. Arrive before 10 AM or after 2 PM for a more intimate visit. The pigs are real, but they're fed by guides and boats — please don't feed them human food (alcohol, in particular, has reportedly made some ill). For ethical wildlife encounters, look at Andros (blue holes, native parrots) or Inagua (40,000+ flamingos at Union Creek Reserve). These islands also need visitors more than Pig Beach does."

"Amalfi Coast in summer is stunning but challenging. Berthing fees run €150-300/night even for 50ft catamarans. The recommended strategy: anchor out in quiet bays (Cala di Ieranto, Marina del Cantone) and dinghy in. Capri's Marina Grande charges premium prices; the alternative is anchoring at Cala del Rio on the south side of the island — beautiful and free. Beware the strong Mistral-like NW Libeccio that can pipe up suddenly in late afternoon. Aeolian Islands (Stromboli) are far less crowded and a stunning sail south."
