LAYOUT & ACCOMMODATIONS:
The T-shaped main saloon/galley area measures about 24 wide and 18 long. This is a very large area for any boat and provides a huge area for gathering and socializing. When complete, the boat will have 4 queen size cabins, plus the V-berth. Only part of the interior partitions have been built out.The galley is very large for a sailboat more like a large motor yacht or apartment. There is a 36 wide 5-burner professional gas cook top, a large house style double bowl Kohler sink, a 24 gas wall oven and space for a large size Norcold refrigerator. Note that none of the above is fully installed. Nothing except the sink drains are connected.
I have removed the mizzen mast and put in a center console on the aft deck. That really opened up the aft deck for fishing, diving, chartering, entertaining, etc.
ELECTRONICS & NAVIGATION:
No electronics have been installed, except the transducer for a FURUNO LS6000 LCD FISH FINDER / DEPTH SOUNDER. The unit itself is new and still in the box. There is also a new Apelco 5200 VHF MARINE RADIO and a new SEAWORTHY SEA-8900WB MARINE RADIO / CASSETTE PLAYER. Both are still in the box.ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL:
The main engine is a Perkins 4-236, 85 hp Diesel, that I bought used with very low hours. It is in excellent running condition. Currently the drive shaft is disconnected. It will have to be reconnected before the boat could be moved. A diver will be needed to reconnect the shaft maybe 2 hours of work and $200.00 expense. The steering system is a hynautic hydraulic system. It has been totally rebuilt and is in like new condition.
There is a 2.5 kw portable generator that has not been run since a recent rebuild.
DECK & HULLS:
MAINFRAME was originally built in 1977 at Hypoluxo Marina, near West Palm Beach, in Florida. The designer was Norman Cross from San Diego, California. The hull is the typical Cross design: double diagonal plywood over wood frames and stringers. The hulls were then covered with multiple layers of fiberglass, faired and then painted. All of the hulls are in good condition. The hull was totally replanked a few years ago a very expensive project.
There is some charring on the interior of the port side outer hull due to a fire that was started by lightning recently. The buyer would need to repair a few of the charred frames and fair or cover the charred wood. It has already been sealed with a primer.
There is also some wood rot on the aft underside of the starboard wingdeck, however, this does not seem to be structural damage. The area does need to be opened up just the same and repaired.
I have added all new 1 I.D. custom brushed aluminum railings all around the entire boat, as well as 4 I.D. brushed aluminum pipes between the bows to support future trampolines. This project alone cost around $10,000. I have had experienced sailors call the railings a work of art. In my opinion, the railings are exceptional, they are both good looking and very functional: 36 high around the aft deck and at the center bow, 30 high at the outside bows and along the sides. There are a few minor finishing touches to be done. There are 6 new custom rod holders to be welded onto the aft railing this can be a sailboat that can be used for some serious fishing.
There is a custom aft ladder from the swim platform to the deck that is integral to the aft railings. There is an new 5-step single post boarding ladder to be mounted on the swim platform this will be a great boat for swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving.
I installed a strong seal dripless stuffing box. This boat is dry as a bone, no bilge water, no bilge odor.
I layed up an integral fiberglass water tank amidships, under the saloon floor. I also layed up an integral fiberglass fuel tank under the galley floor. I do not yet know the full capacity of the tanks, but they are large and adequate.
SAILS & RIGGING:
The mast is in place and I believe that the standing rigging is in good condition. I do know of one crack on the port side turnbuckle.
I have purchased several good used sails there is a Main, Jib, Genoa and Spinnaker on board. None of them have ever been raised since I purchased them.I have built a flat platform on the saloon roof for a 10 long traveler track. The track itself as well as most other deck hardware and running rigging for the sails will have to be purchased and installed.
There are 2 large winches sitting on the saloon roof. They are not installed and there are several smaller winches below.
There is a new electric windlass ,mounted on the foredeck. It is not wired up yet.
There are several new cleats, fairleads and deck plates on the foredeck for the ground tackle.
There are 3 good anchor rodes aboard the boat. The working anchor is a 35 lb high tensile Danforth. It has 100 of 5/16 G4 chain and 200+ of Ύ nylon rope. All of the anchor rodes are new. The bow roller and the bow platform itself are new.
The rub rails are new. I built out the hulls with a full 2 x 4 of clear marine grade fir lumber, and then added a very heavy duty plastic rub rail a $1000.00+ project.
OTHER:
There are many power tools, hand tools and miscellaneous extras that will go with the boat. There are 2 inflatable dinghies; a 13 Avon that is old but still usable, and a 15 1993 Caribe. There are 2 model year 2001 15hp Johnson outboard motors. Both outboards are very low hours and are in excellent running condition.
OWNERS COMMENTS:
MAINFRAME began life as a 46 Cross Trimaran. It was sold to me as a 50 Trimaran because of the addition of a custom swim platform and bow pulpit; giving an overall length of about 50 06. The boat was purchased by myself in 1987. At that time, 15 years ago, it appraised for almost $100,000.I used it for several years, mostly in the Bahamas and Florida. The boat was then stored for a few years due to health reasons. I am now retired with a medical disability due to respiratory problems.
When I returned to the boat, I began a rebuild project that is still ongoing. This boat was basically a 1970s design and began to look very old-fashioned when the modern multihull boats began to hit the market. I decided to modernize the boat by totally redesigning the deck, wheelhouse and interior. I wanted a modern looking boat that could be used for multiple purposes: day sails with many passengers, weekly charters, serious fishing and diving as well as being a comfortable liveaboard home. I wanted as much interior space as I could get.
About 2 years ago I took the boat out of the water at the Lauderdale Marine Center for 3 months to accomplish this task. I spent around $40,000 on yard fees, materials and labor. The entire top of the boat was professionally rebuilt and reglassed (see the pictures above). The bottom was sanded back to bare glass and painted with 3 coats of Micron CSC bottom paint. The topsides were sanded, painted with 2 coats of Awlgrip primer, and then 3 coats of easypoxy topcoat. The deck were painted with 2 coats of Awlgrip primer. All of the plexiglass windows and doors were changed.
About 1 and a half years ago I moved the boat to its present location. A few months later it was hit by lightning. One cabin area of the boat was totally charred and the entire interior turned black with soot and smoke damage. All of the new plexiglass is ruined. All of the plastic in the hatches is ruined.
Since the fire I have totally emptied the boat and pressure cleaned the interior. I then sprayed 16 gallons of B.I.N., stain and smell killing primer on the entire interior. Now the boat is relatively clean, and is smell free. There is clean interior ready to build out.
There was no structural damage done by the fire.
One cabin area will have to be rebuilt from the inside. The boat has a sandwich construction in that area. The inner layer of glass and the center foam layer were burned, the outer layer is still intact. Two plywood walls were burned and will have to be rebuilt.
I believe that this boat has been upgraded extensively from the basic Cross Trimaran design it is now a custom trimaran and has very modern lines. I believe that when completed this boat will be worth close to $200,000, but it does need a significant amount of work to make it functional and a lot of work to make it into a comfortable liveaboard yacht.
I do not believe that this boat is for a first time boat buyer. I believe that it will sell to an experienced cruiser who wants to move up to a big multihull: or to a charter operation of some kind. Whoever buys it will have to have the skills and time to complete the boat himself or the money to get it done by other people. It will be a relatively inexpensive way for someone to move up to a big cruising multihull.
