The Hull Deck & Bulkheads were molded in 1996. The boat was outfitted, registered and launched in 1998/1999. The boat was completed by a Yachtmaster (owner), strengthened and enhanced for an Atlantic crossing and comfortable cruising. SPIRIT OF TARA has been based in Trinidad since July 2000. She has been lightly used although the present owner has managed to do some cruising in the Caribbean (including the Trinidad Islands, Grenada, Caricou and the Tobago Cays) with his family of six. The latest trip being the delivery to Fort Lauderdale (6 days from USVI to Fort Lauderdale). This boat performs very well – up to half wind speed!

The professional crew on delivery  trip called her a sailing machine far better to sail than other catamarans the crew had sailed.

In 15 – 20 knots of wind SPIRIT OF TARA will do 7 – 10 knots comfortably. The mast is raked back to enable sailing into wind at angles up to 30%. Under motor at 2500 – 2700 rpm this vessel motors at 7 knots easily. It is no surprise then, that the Island Spirit 37 was voted “Boat of the Year 2001” by SAIL Magazine.

Other interesting aspects of SPIRIT OF TARA are as follows: The wide antiskid deck allows for easy maneuverability; Small anti-skid cabin top steps alongside the mast put the top of the boom within easy reach; The light and responsive steering system offers a pleasing amount of feedback, making the boat a pleasure to drive under power or sail; The solar panels provide useful power cord keep the battery topped up at anchor and is enhanced by a new battery management/inverter system; The Bimini frame was specially designed and reinforced to extend over the cockpit giving a large aft sitting area; The bimini doubles as a rain collector system; The boat is easy sailing for one or two people, with accommodations for eight. The extra size primary anchor  combined with 200ft of chain and an enhanced foot operated anchor windlass makes anchoring and pulling up anchor an easy task. The large gennaker ensures ample speeds in winds up to 20 knots. All sails and equipment on the boat are less than three years old. The engines have been lightly used and are virtually as new but run-in.

This is a sturdy, practical and comfortable cruiser with a surprising amount of living space both in the saloon and cockpit.
