WILDCAT, originally named, SIDAWAY, was single-handed by her owner Sid Burchell from England to Brazil. There he married and brought the boat and his new wife north to Florida. Unfortunately his wife was prone to seasickness and Sid reluctantly sold the boat to us in 1989. With the help of our fathers we brought the boat home to Virginia in 10 days, mostly offshore. We renamed the boat WILDCAT and used her for summer vacations and weekends for two years. We then extensively refitted the boat and took a year off to sail with our 11 year old son in 1992-3. We spent five wonderful months in the Bahamas reaching as far south as Crooked Island. The Bahamas were considerably more crowded than our previous trips there in 1979 and 1980. We found the shoal draft of WILDCAT allowed us to get away from the crowds and seek out secure anchorages in what was an abnormally cold and stormy winter there. Since our return we have found that we are not sailing WILDCAT enough to justify keeping her.HISTORY:
EXTERIOR:
Prior to our sabbatical, we replaced all the
standing rigging, upgrading to 9/32 SS wire. All the terminals and turnbuckles
were replaced using Norseman fittings. The double lifelines were also replaced.
The front windows were also replaced at this time.
A custom Bimini enclosing the entire cockpit was made in 1991. We had front
window panels made to keep out the weather. This year the eisenglass and bimini
fabric was replaced.
