COMMENTS:
When first introduced in 1991, the Catana 48 was the flagship for this well respected French catamaran builder. The Catana 48 was designed with asymmetrical hulls and all weight concentrated in the center of the platform for an easier motion at sea. In addition, the dagger boards greatly increase the windward making and pointing abilities of this design and the tulip shaped bows prevents any chance of pitch poling.

MERLIN is only one of two Catana 48Rs built by Catana. The Catana 48R was a special model built with additional Kevlarฎ and carbon fiber to reduce weight and a taller rig with a bow sprit for additional sail area. Many experienced catamaran sailors who have followed Catana through the years consider the Catana 48R as one of the fastest Catana models ever built.

Originally built for an avid Italian multihull racer/cruiser, RUSTY PELICAN (her original name), won a number of multihull races in the Mediterranean in her early years. RUSTY PELICAN was sailed to Florida in 1996 by her original owner and purchased by her current owner who renamed her MERLIN.

In 1997, MERLIN completed a major refit, which included such items as a beautiful book match Rosewood interior, Nidacore synthetic teak & holly sole, vinyl padded hull liners, bulkheads, and ceiling. The entire 12VDC & 110VAC systems were replaced to meet US standards, and a number of her mechanical systems updated or replaced.

Only used in the winter months, MERLIN is now seriously for sale by her owner who is placing an order for a larger Catana model. She has been equipped and maintained by both owners with an open check book policy, never chartered, and ready for blue water sailing at a moments notice.
