Accommodations

Dolphin Dancer has one of the largest salons available for a yacht of this size. The 6 foot 6 inch headroom layout is designed to be functional, open and ergonomic. In addition to the two outside steering stations, there is a fully instrumented inside helm next to the chart table.

A full-length settee for reading or sleeping separates the helm from a dining lounge and a 6 foot 8 inch dining table. Along the main windowed bulkhead stretches an extensive galley with stove, broiler oven, double sinks, refrigerator and microwave. With shelves above, cabinets below and plenty of counter space this galley is a welcomed surprise.

Also on the main level is a large head with an oversized shower to starboard; wet locker and another smaller head to port. One could live in this well ventilated bridge deck comfortably while at sea or at anchor and never even venture into the hulls.

The starboard hull contains a master cabin with king-sized bed and settee aft, a reading/sleeping settee mid-ships and single berths forward. The port hull also contains a master cabin with king-sized bed aft, single births forward, with a large workbench set amidships next to the freezer. The heads are porcelain electric Sealand vacuum flush with a holding tank.

Hull

It is construction that sets this sailing catamaran apart from the run-of-the-mill boats one sees on the market these days. With John Shuttleworth as designer and Tektron as builder, we were able to get the strength out of the materials.

This vessel is a sandwich of Airex foam core, skinned with carbon, Kevlar and S glass set in epoxy matrix. Three beams of carbon fiber and epoxy tie the two hulls together. The rudders, centerboards, boom and mast are made of carbon fiber. Even the chainplates and attachments on the mast are composite and molded into the structure.

All major components were vacuumed bagged and post baked for maximum strength. The vessel is of high technology with the design being CAD computer generated. This process is done only on custom composite boats where the main loading of the vessel is carried through the skins of the cored hulls. The interior is all foam core construction.
Sails and Rigging

MAST & SPARS:
The vessel is equipped with one 72 foot wing mast with 24" NASA cord and double spreader solid rod rigging. The boom is 22 feet long and both are built of carbon construction. The standing rigging is dieform 1/2 " stainless and the running rigging is Spectra.

SAILS:
The Main sail is all Spectra and fully battened with lazy jacks and triple reefing points. The Number two jib is fully battened Spectra. The Number one (genoa) is also Spectra and has never been used. There is an Asymmetrical Spinnaker

Comments

While there is plenty of storage most everywhere, the boat has great open interior volume. The hulls expand and curve above the waterline creating real living space. She is completely faired and painted on the interior and is easy to clean with no headliners or fabric walls to maintain. With the Galley 'up' you won't find more counter space than most any 50 foot sailboat. Cooking and entertaining are a breeze.

Owner has recently come back (2005) from spending time on the boat and says: At present, having 'gone over all systems' I would set sail for anywhere I wished. The engines are in working order as well as all pumps and instruments. There is a new Spectra mainsail and jib made by Gary Martin Sails (Multihull Specialists in Australia). A new Profurl head sail roller and new standing rigging installed. She was painted in side and out in 2000 and is still in fine condition.
I've sailed the boat about 24,000 miles mostly shorthanded or solo with pleasure. The boat has seen sustained 50 kt wind-against-Gulfstream-current conditions. We went with the wind in huge seas under bare pole and maneuvered easily with the wing mast alone.
The boat is very easy to live on and kids seem to love her. The front net is huge and kids migrate there and lay on the carbon beam watching the bows.
