BOMBADIL - Ready for your Adventure!

Named after Tom Bombadil from the "Lord of the Rings" (books) Bombadil is ready for your adventures. This is a fine example of an all fiberglass constructed factory built yacht. The current owners have just performed major renovations last year.

Trades Considered
The current owners are Building a home in the Pacific Northwest and would consider trades of Trailerable boats, Aircraft, Boats located on the West coast, some vehicles, and some property. Let us know.

Live the Dream
Imagine cruising along a reef at over 7.5 knots for hours on end.  Imagine swiming with the dolphins from your own swim step.  Imagine barbequing lobster on the stern of your own catamarn with a cold cervesa in your hand after hours of snorkling...We did it!  Now its your turn. Stop dreaming and live the dream.

LAYOUT & ACCOMMODATIONS:
Bombadil is CRUISE READY and is an extremely comfortable boat for long-distance cruising.  She has plenty of seating both inside and out, as well as ample “comfy cushion space”.  Each of the sleeping quarters have newer extra thick (6 inch) upholstered cushions.  The Dinette of the Quest model Prout can sit 6 in standard mode, or 2-3 more if the Master bed is turned into seating. The Master Bed is “queen sized” and fully rectangular, not a funny triangle as found in monohulls. The quaterberths are extra long and built as a single berth, however an extremely cozy couple could manage here.

There are screens for every window, hatch and door on board.  This is an often overlooked item until you really need it.  You are kept comfortable in even the most interesting “mangrove” anchorage.

While on watch for those long crossings in mellow seas, the spacious bow of the boat is a comfortable place to hang out reading watching for there craft and ships.  While the autopilot does the real work.  Otherwise the cockpit offers excellent protection from the element with the custom wooden Bimini which was just recovered.

Unusual for a boat her size, Bombadil has a large custom swim step.  This is a wonderful feature while snorkeling and diving as well as pulling in that big catch. The platform retracts while underway.  This custom wooden platform is beautifully constructed, and along with all the wood on the Yachts exterior has just been refinished (June 2004), epoxy coated the coated with 6 – 8 coats of Transparent Seatol varnish.  It should only require light sanding and additional coats of Seatol this season.

GALLEY:
The Galley area (starboard ama) of a Prout Quest is quite roomy compared to a 31’ monohull.  There is a 3 burner propane stove, the 120v/12v refrigerator, stainless steel sink and counter area.  Water is supplied by a shurflo pressure water pump for the fresh water from the tank in the keel of this ama.  Bombadil also has a “saltwater” faucet and electric pump.  This is used while cruising to save water to rinse dishes and is a “must have” for any serious cruising.  Features such as this saltwater pump add to Bombadil’s “cruise readiness”.

Another important feature of the Galley is actually out on the hand rail.  A Force 10 stainless BBQ is on board and ready to cook those fillets and lobsters!

MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL:

Yanmar Diesel Power
In late 2003 the power plant underwent some major renovations, including pulling the engine from the vessel, thoroughly cleaning, then pulling the top and bottoms from the engine.  This inspection showed no reason to perform a complete overhaul, instead the 15 hp Yanmar was fitted with new gaskets, new motor mounts. Any item in need of service was taken care of, including, new starter brushes, and other service.  The alternator has just been replaced (June 2004).  Since the 2QM15 Yanmar was put back into service it has proven quite reliable and has run over 160 hours since January 2004 to date.  During this period this engine consumes about 0.6 gallons of diesel per hour at normal cruise and uses only 1 quart of oil in 30+ hours of operation.

Electrical Power
Bombadil has complete systems to maintain its 4 deep cycle batteries set up in two banks.  While at dock, the solar panel maintains the batteries while the refrigerator runs off of 120 volt dock power (the unit is 12volt or 120 volt and automatically switches to 120 when available). There is also a 10 amp battery charger which may be used with shore power as well.  Shore power is provided to the boat via a long 30 amp service cable. There are two AC outlets (one in each hull) and there is a shore power circuit breaker control next to the refrigerator.  The vessel is equipped with a marine air conditioning unit which currently requires a water pump and re-installation before use.  There are two 120v fans provided with Bombadil or the two 12v fans mounted on the walls for ventilation when mother nature takes a break. In addition, a “windsock” which can be used to “scoop” a breeze into a hatch is provided.

When cruising the Air Marine Wind Generator provides power to charge the batteries and keep up with the demands of the 12v DC refrigerator. This is a fine piece of equipment, is mounted high on an aluminum mast and ready to provide power just like the larger cruising yachts costing 2-3 times as much.  If the wind slows for a few days the engine may be run occasionally to keep up with the fridge. “Cold cerveza is always at hand”.

The electrical systems of the yacht have been renewed and upgraded (Spring 2004).  Most of the systems have been rewired to eliminate corrosion and maximize safety and carefree operations.  In most areas, oversize wire has been used for added durability.

SAILS & RIGGING:
Bombadil had all of the top rigging redone in the mid-nineties, so this expensive maintenance item should not need redoing for years to come. The fully battened Main Sail is in good shape (7.5 / 10).  There are 5 fore sails on board.  Prouts are rigged with Genoa and Jibs as larger sails than the Main. Bombadil’s sail inventory includes sails appropriate for light air - to gale force using the Storm Jib and reefed main. All 5 fore sails are in Good or better condition. Some are showing some soiling, but all are in good repair.  There is a drifter sail on board which is ripped and in need of repair or replacement if desired. The Main sail cover was replaced with a custom cover made of “Sunbrella” (March 2004).

Total sail=5 (main, genoa, jib, storm, and stay)
One torn drifter sail (will stay with boat for future pattern?)

COMMENTS:

Bombadil is ready for your groceries and GPS to head for the Keys or the Bahamas!

This yacht is ready to go complete with Dishes, BBQ, Dingy and a full tank of diesel. A complete renovation of all systems has been completed in just the last 6 months, and she has cruised Mexico, Belize and Guatemala since then. Owner is ready to buy next boat in Seattle while it's early in the boating season!

Bombadil is a 31’ Prout Quest Sailing Catamaran.

Built in 1977, Bombadil remained in Holland for years before moving to Florida then to Belize and Guatemala where she stayed until 2004. Prouts are known for building (or overbuilding) extremely sturdy yachts and just looking at the quality and construction techniques throughout this vessel easily confirms this reputation.

Bombadil is a well-equipped, well-maintained example of the Prout Quest line.  She is fully equipped for cruising.

In fact the current owners just returned from months in Mexico and Belize in April 2004 with Bombadil exactly as equipped plus their hand held GPS and computer.  Any items in need of maintenance have been attended to since arriving back in Florida.

She is ready to go when you are!
