Winds 0 to 18: Full main and jib18 to 23: Jib and flattening reef in main23 to 27: Partial jib and one reef in main27 to 35: 2nd reef and partial jibMax heel under these conditions is 7 degrees. I have never taken water into the cockpit and the protected bridge deck keeps guests warm and dry even on the coldest days. With the shallow draft, you can arrive in confidence at low tide where a monohull would be sweating it out at high tide. With the bay and delta silting up, this is an increasing advantage. I've spent a nice overnight at the San Rafael Yacht club in San Rafael for this reason. We were the only sail boat because low tide was < 3 ft.WINTER PLAN:Genoa replaces jib and winds are lighter.
COMMENTS:Starting 5 boats prior to mine in the 2000 model year Performance Cruising changed the rig to one that it 1 ft. taller with a boom one ft. longer. This was done after extensive testing on the factory demo boat. The additional sail area from a new design main, with more roach, a flat top, and full battens makes a huge difference to windward. Due to changes at the mast head, additional options downwind, such as adding a screecher (as I have done) are possible. My rig and sails are the same as those on 2001 models.OTHER CHANGES:The interior mold was updated. As a result the boat is stiffer because of the additional bracing added.Dinnette is convertible to a berthCabin entries are widerAdditional counter space in the galleyMore teak and teak doors in the master cabinAdditional 120 V outlets in Master and galleyHead with a moveable panel that converts the area to a nice shower - and keeps the head dry!Asymetrical centerboards (increased upwind performance)My Gemini points very well with the centerboards. I regularly sail in the company of 40' cruising monohulls upwind, and sometimes pass them upwind. If you are considering a late model Gemini, please keep these mid-2000 model year changes in mind.Estimated replacement cost for a similar equipped Gemini on the west coast is:
Gemini 105 137,000 Factory Options 2,000 Commission 2,000 Taxes 11,280 Shipping 8,000 Radar, GPS, AC,etc. 4,000 Jib 1,000 Spin and Drifter 4,000 Total ~ 169,000 Also, mine is available now vs. waiting ~ 10 months for factory delivery.
I would be willing to train new owners on the fine points of catamaran sailing. A 'learn as you go' delivery trip may also be available for West coast buyers.
